SDP in harrisonburg

One of the biggest parts of what Mu Psi does is our community engagement. Our members actively participate in free tutoring for JMU students, fundraising nights for our chapter philanthropy, and volunteering as interpreters for non-English speakers in the Harrisonburg community. Read below to get more information about each aspect of our community engagement efforts!

Free weekly tutoring

Each week, Sigma Delta Pi offers 1 hour of free Spanish tutoring to the James Madison University community. These take place every Tuesday from 7:30-8:30pm in our Student Success Center.

Fundraising nights

We support local restaurants and our philanthropy at the same time by setting up fundraising nights where a percentage of the proceeds is given to our chapter so that we can donate it. We work with: Campus Cookies, Chipotle, Jalapeños Southwest Grill, and Tropical Smoothie.
Interpreting in HCPS
Maybe the most important thing we do in our Harrisonburg community is interpreting in the Harrisonburg City Public School system for parent-teacher conferences. Harrisonburg has a large Spanish-speaking population, and many of the parents don't speak English, making it hard for them to interact with their children's teachers. Sigma Delta Pi Mu Psi volunteers as interpreters for these conferences, and our members attend training sessions in order to make sure we are prepared and ready to aid both the teachers and parents in understanding these important conversations. Our members are typically placed in Keister Elementary School, Spotswood Elementary School, Smithland Elementary School, Stone Spring Elementary School, and Harrisonburg High School.
